America's Worst Politicians

King George III was “a Tyrant... unfit to be the ruler of a free people,” Thomas Jefferson wrote in the Declaration of Independence exactly 238 years ago this week.

Tommy had it right.

Ever since then, Americans have been calling out their leaders. “Tyrant” was just the start. We’ve moved on to crook (Nixon), liar (Clinton), and moron (Dubya).

Whether or not you agree with the peanut gallery, there’s no denying that such written assaults on public honchos are as American as baseball, apple pie, and the iPhone.

So on this Independence Day, those closest to American politics — 50 writers and editors of the alternative press from across the land — have combined their collective genius. They’ve named 53 of the nation’s worst elected leaders from 23 of the largest states and the District of Columbia, then separated them into five categories: hatemongers, sleazeballs, blowhards, users and boozers, and horn dogs. And there’s more than just the usual stodgy Washington losers. Try Colorado sheriff Terry Maketa, who allegedly had sex with not one, not two, but three underlings and then lied about it. Or check out Idaho Senate GOP leader John McGee, who stole and crashed an SUV, admitted to drinking too much, and went to jail. Upon returning to the statehouse, he was accused of groping a female staffer.

Want a little old-school corruption? Florida’s governor, Rick Scott, who will be up for re-election soon, founded a health-care empire that was whacked with the largest Medicare fraud fine in U.S. history: $1.7 billion for stealing from the feds. There’s also Washington, D.C. council member Michael Brown, who once accepted $200,000 to stay out of an election and was later indicted after grabbing at a cash-stuffed duffel bag offered by an undercover FBI agent.

Of course, there are big names here too. South Carolina’s “Luv Guv” Mark Sanford made the list. So did Texas’ Green Eggs and Ham filibusterer Ted Cruz and Minnesota loon Michele Bachmann. Even pol wannabe Donald Trump snuck in a side door.

So before you head out for the fireworks or swig some American brew, consider this hall of shame. — CHUCK STROUSE

what about that son of bitch marco rubio

Marco Rubio is a product of entitlement through the mechanisms of the most corrupt political system I have seen (at the surface) during my lifetime in Florida.Trying to look more Hispanic by referring to the same Marco Rubio who talks big but fails to deliver? I am a firm believer of Washington living by the same standards as the people, across the board (in terms of benefits, salaries, vacations, retirement, etc.). The question is, is this guy in over his head or not ?  I am not alone in thinking he is not representing all Floridians? We could go into politics like rubio. Using our state Amex card for my personal things, still be in college tuition debt, and buy a second home with other legislators and let it go onto foreclosure. Not sure what advice you could those that pay their bills for someone that has healthcare insurance through the taxpayer.Hey Marco, man-up, Why not enlist and do a couple of tours of duty over there? You're young enough. How about shedding some of your own blood for once? Maybe, you'll be less gung-ho to shed someone else's..Rubio's 2010 senate campaign was fined $8,000 by the Federal Elections Committee for receiving "prohibited, excessive and other impermissible contributions totaling $210,173.09."Marco Rubio, was paying thousands to Bovo's firm absentee Helping Rubio cruise to a surprise win was a political consulting firm owned by Viviana Bovo, the wife of county Commissioner Esteban Bovo. She was paid $19,637 for "political strategy" and "consulting" by Rubio's campaign.Marco Rubio, was paying thousands to Bovo's firm absentee voting 78,223 absentee votes, compared to 26,533 for Meek and 25,478 for Crist. He claims to be an expert schooled in Climate Science and he is a  CHICKEN HAWK.Hey Marco, man-up, Why not enlist and do a couple of tours of duty over there? You're young enough. How about shedding some of your own blood for once? Maybe, you'll be less gung-ho to shed someone else's.

I wonder what sort of future will all this give rise to? it possible that nothing at all will change. words are nothing more than words. Even laws are interpreted in whatever manner best suits people’s interests

Can it be assumed that this series will continue next week with a list of the worst DEMOCRAT politicians? Since I didn't see the names Barrack Obama, Joe Biden, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, Jimmy Carter, Hilary Clinton, or Debbie Wasserman-Schultz on this week's list I have to assume that future installments are to be forthcoming.

It would seem that there is a reasonably finite population associated with politics. Perhaps the paper could collect data on the currently seated governors, state and US legislature members, their political party affiliations, and whether or not there has ever been an event of the type described in this article associated directly with them, and if so how many, and of which kind. Once there is a complete data set, it would be interesting to do run some statistics on them to find out what the reality of the issue is. Then build upon that, open the data set up a bit and include known campaign contributors, known lobbying groups, and companies that these people do business with and then write an app that can show the relationships between them. For instance bubbles of different types for people, businesses, contributors, etc with relationship lines between them with a description. Would be more than amusing to look at, and might actually be downright revealing. I am surprised someone hasn't done it already (NSA excluded). I am  tempted to do it myself if I didn't have other things going on. Would love to watch the scramble that would follow.

How could you not have Debbie Wassermannn -Schultz on the list. She is the lowest form of politician ever and to leave her out shows this is slanted very LEFT

@hlain9152 I guess if you have other categories such as working with hands ties behind his back (BHO), Shot gun king (JB) and (DC) must be a VP thing, JC was peanuts, Hilary POTUS in the wings, Debbie can do no wrong.

Have a wonderful day and by the way there were dems in the categories you just could not keep focused beyond the third or fourth entry. Besides we all know both parties have bad apples you "consevative" tea baggers and donkeys just can't handle the truth, how about the log cabin repbs you all cant stand your own.

If theres a rule you'll break it or make it to your liking. DMA, Citizens United need I go on???

@Anthonyvop1

Seems you didn't like the coverage of your pals...had you looked under sleazeballs you will find some dems in the spot light. But again the GOP is not about finding common ground its about pounding lies until they sound like truths. You all are wussies constantly crying foul while you stab the 99% in the back. Wuss!

@marta57 @hlain9152 Don't you mean "Trying his best to destroy our country by pitting race against race and totally ignoring the wishes of the people" for (BHO)? Neither Biden or Cheney are worth the .410 bird shell it would take to blow their brains out. I haven't seen DWS do anything RIGHT yet (but I do wish she'd take a bath and wash her greasy hair.) I see even you couldn't come up with anything positive for Nancy Pelosi so I guess you do have some reasoning skills.

Because we all know a Democrat can do no wrong..........

Sweety, a liberal calling a conservative a wussie is like a man saying they are really interested in what a woman's opinion is......  Not really true.

No one of your Log cabin republicans will probably be climbing all over the poor dude. I've heard they are quite aggressive.

@marta57 @hlain9152 @joholso95  It seems as though YOU are implying that being gay is a bad thing. Better watch out, they'll take your official pro-gay liberal democrat membership card away!
